Lore

The Deep Sea holds many Secrets

When venturing out onto the seas of Neo Maera, Leviathans and regular marine life are not the only beings you may come across. The serpents share the waters with a different kind altogether- the Nimare (basically, merfolk!), often called fish people. A highly advanced society that has built many cities below the waves, inaccessible to humans or those who exclusively breathe air (at least, without assistance). The Nimare are humanoids that usually have features of fish, but some of them take after cephalopods instead. They are built more sturdy than surface dwellers, with study, horn like claws on both feet and hands, as well as reinforced, thick lower arms. These arms serve to improve their swimming speed alongside their tails. They are, however, the fastest in their mer-form, which allows them to trade legs for a tail (or tentacles). While not all Nimare make use of this skill, it is one inherent to them all.

The Nimare live in a society where individuals are born into a certain rank that they cannot move out of. Generally, this distinction is between alphas, betas and omegas. Most of the population is at the beta rank, with the other two making up a smaller part. These ranks are not determinable by size or gender, but rather,  the looks of their tails, and an inherent kind of scent that all Nimare can instinctively place correctly. That said, there are ways to mask this - though this should be applied with caution. While it is traditionally true that alpha's tend to be the most sought after for being providers or protectors, and omega are the most sought after for their beauty, this has no impact on an individual's skill or worth. Unfortunately, there are still definite tensions in their society caused by rank and standing, making it harder to navigate for outsiders and those disagreeing with the old ways.

Before claiming the Land

In ancient times, Nimare used to only exist with their mer-form, unable to move out of the oceans and lakes. They were, in fact, much more likely to inhabit the wide ocean and seas alongside the leviathans - which came with its own set of dangers. Back then, Nimare used to live either alone or in very small groups of at most five, constantly moving places and only really meddling with others to form new bonds or mate. As such, their current rank-based societal structures did not exist back then, which often comes as a surprise to many. In fact, these ranks only slowly began forming once the Nimare began to form bigger and bigger groups, then built cities, and finally moved on to land. This is why to this day, telling a rank based on mer-tail size alone is difficult, although frills and scent are still a good way to figure it out. It is much easier to visually tell their rank apart by considering their land form.

Features

All nimare share these features!

  • elf like ears that can have a shape like fins or fins attached
  • sturdy claws with two toes on the feet, 5 fingers on hands. Must have lines seperating segments/display the armor as shown in the subtype images.
  • any colors are ok! The less they interact with the surface, the less likely  they are to have "human like" skin.
  • gills on their neck and/or below chest area
  • Optional: spikes, fins/scales on their body, sturdy lower arms, webbed fingers
  • eyes of any color (the more human the more likely to interact with the surface)

Please Note:
We will accept alpha's with tails or tentacles shorter than their height if you choose to upload it as such (and mostly want it for the rank not the appearance), but generally, try to make them clearly bigger than a beta!

Transformations

Mer

Mer Masterlist Examples

Species: Nimare
Granted By: None, this transformation is available for use anytime!

Although Nimare have developed to be bipedal over centuries, due to also laying claim to homes on land and interacting with the surface more, they have ever retained the ability to turn into their leg-less mer form. Since for this transformation, their legs and fins merge to form a long tail or tentacles respectively, their rank cannot always be determined by the size of it alone - although it is still true that most betas and alphas will have bigger or longer tails than an omega.
